Local organizations help set Prince George apart in the healthcare and social assistance sectors through their leadership and innovation in the delivery of healthcare services. As home to the head office for Northern Health, the largest and only teaching hospital in the region, the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia, and the BC Cancer Agency Centre for the North; Prince George offers quality and diverse healthcare services.
The BC Cancer Agency Center for the North is a key component of the Northern Cancer Control Strategy. The strategy is a joint partnership between the BC Cancer Agency, the Provincial Health Services Authority and Northern Health, which is focused on enhancing the continuum of cancer services in the north. The cancer center in Prince George brings cancer services closer to home for residents across central and northern BC, so that patients and their families do not have to travel as far to access specialized care, such as radiation therapy.

The Blue Pine Primary Health Care Clinic was created to address the needs of Prince George residents who do not currently have access to a family physician or nurse practitioner. Although patients with a wide range of needs are seen at the clinic, the focus of the clinic is to provide care to people who need more support than a regular family doctor’s office is able to offer. The clinic has a team of health professionals that includes family physicians, nurse practitioners, a mental health clinician and a social worker who work together to support the diverse care needs of patients.
The head office for Northern Health is located in Prince George. The health authority provides exceptional health services for people living in the city and in Central and Northern British Columbia. Northern Health covers two-thirds of the province, with a population base of about 335,000 people, and has more than 7,000 employees working at over 24 hospitals, 23 long-term care facilities, public health units and other specialized service providers.
Indigenous Health supports Northern Health in its commitment to partner with First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples and to build a health system that honors diversity and provides culturally safe services. Indigenous Health is distinct from the First Nations Health Authority.
The Prince George Division of Family Practive is a local innovation in healthcare, and part of a province-wide initiative designed to strengthen primary healthcare in BC. Established in March 2009 and operating as a non-profit society, the Division is built on a foundation and tradition of innovation, development, and continuous quality improvement. The division is one of three provincial prototypes to begin working on providing access to a family physician for each citizen who wants their own doctor through the “A GP for Me” initiative.
