Job Description

This position is accountable to the Associate Director, International and Student Services (ISS) for overseeing the daily operations at Nahoonai-a Indigenous Housing, and works in collaboration with both Student Services and the Vice President, Indigenization’s team in the design and implementation of a support system and educational network for Indigenous students who are making a transition from their home communities to the College of New Caledonia. As a community-recognized Elder or Mentor, the Cultural Advisor, Nahoonai-a will provide cultural guidance and mentorship to Indigenous students.

NATURE & SCOPE:
• Nahoonai-a was designed with a true ‘home’ feel as a twelve-bedroom house with a large living room, spacious kitchen, laundry area, study rooms, and beautiful cultural room. The first of its kind in the province, this unique position requires flexibility, adaptability, and continuous collaboration with the Associate Director, ISS, the Manager, Indigenous Initiatives and Inclusion, the Director of Student Services and other College leadership.
• This role provides supports to students within the house, and the ongoing implementation of a life skills program that includes cooking, cleaning, and laundry duties for each student.
• The Cultural Advisor is actively engaged in supporting students by being familiar with community resources, college staff, services and supports. Understanding systems and processes enables the Cultural Advisor to provide effective and timely advice and mentorship to students.
• The Cultural Advisor must be available to students when their knowledge or attention is required, including on evenings and weekends.
• You will be part of a team actively engaged in contributing to and accomplishing the vision, mission, and goals of the College and in supporting the aspirations and needs of our learners.
• You will promote a positive work atmosphere by interacting and communicating in a professional manner that demonstrates mutual respect with students and colleagues.
